A Statement from the YWCA Lower Cape Fear

Eliminate Racism. Empower Women.

The YWCA Lower Cape Fear is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Sonya Massey, who was fatally shot in her home on July 6, 2024. Sonya had called 911 about a possible prowler, only to face a devastating and senseless end. Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and all who are affected by this heartbreaking event. We mourn the loss of her life, taken far too soon and without reason, echoing the heartbreak felt for the Black women before her, Breonna Taylor and Atatiana Jefferson. We will continue to say their names!

At YWCA Lower Cape Fear, our mission is to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, and dignity for all. Sonya's untimely death is a painful reminder of the urgent need for continued efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of every individual, ESPECIALLY those who are most vulnerable.

This tragedy calls us to action. We must confront the systemic issues that lead to such devastating outcomes and promote environments where everyone is safe, respected, and valued. It’s our shared duty to stand by one another and demand accountability, ensuring that no one else endures such a tragic fate.

As we enter election season, we encourage everyone to engage actively and educate themselves about the candidates and their policies. Your vote is a powerful tool for advocating policies and leaders who prioritize safety and equality for all individuals. Every vote counts in shaping a more equitable society and honoring the memory of those who have been unjustly taken from us. We need leaders who protect our well-being and safety!

YWCA Lower Cape Fear remains dedicated to advocating for justice, equity, and compassion. We are committed to promoting initiatives that build safer, more inclusive communities. We invite everyone to join us in this important mission, recognizing that meaningful change begins with each of us standing together in solidarity and action.

Let’s honor Sonya Massey’s memory by working toward a future where such tragedies are no longer a reality, and every person can live without fear and harm. Together, we can make a difference!
